What Book Is 'Heartstopper' Season 2 Based On?

Nick, Charlie, and the whole Truham-Higgs gang are back, as the second season of Heartstopper dropped today on Netflix. The follow up to last year’s “perfect” first season will pick up where it left

Nick, Charlie, and the whole Truham-Higgs gang are back, as the second season of Heartstopper dropped today on Netflix.

The follow up to last year’s “perfect” first season will pick up where it left off: Nick (Kit Connor) and Charlie (Joe Locke) are officially dating, though it’s mostly in secret as Nick continues to think about how to come out to his family and friends.

It’ll also see the entire main cast, and some new friends, on a co-ed school field trip to the City of Love itself.

All eight episodes of Heartstopper are now streaming on Netflix, but the story doesn’t end there, because, yes, the series is based on a book, and yes, there’s still so much yet to be covered in the series (which was renewed for a third season already!).

Yes! Heartstopper is based a series of graphic novels by writer/illustrator Alice Oseman, who has also written every episode of the TV series so far.

There are currently four volumes of Heartstopper on sale, with a fifth coming in December and a sixth and final volume scheduled to wrap the story up.

Here’s where it gets a little bit confusing: Heartstopper Season 2 is based on Heartstopper Volume 3.

You’d think Season 1 would cover Volume 1, so Season 2 would cover Volume 2, and so on… but since the first season actually covered all of Volumes 1 and 2, Season 2 is primarily using the story from Volume 3, though some elements from Volume 4 aren’t out of the question entirely.

All of the Heartstopper volumes are available in paperback, hardcover, and Kindle e-book form on Amazon. Since Heartstopper is a graphic novel, there isn’t an audiobook for any volume.

If you just want to read Heartstopper Volume 3 to compare it to Season 2, you can get it from Amazon starting at just $7.

Volume 1, Volume 2, and Volume 4 are also available in all of the formats listed above, and you can currently preorder Volume 5, which is scheduled to be published on December 19.

To make things super easy, you can also buy a Heartstopper book set with all four published volumes in paperback form for $54.

Oseman is the author of a few more young adult novels, but one in particular may also be of interest to Heartstopper fans. Their first novel, Solitaire, follows Charlie’s older sister Tori (played by Jenny Walser in the series) and actually features Charlie and Nick’s first appearance in Oseman’s literary universe.

The novella Nick and Charlie also predates Heartstopper and delves further into their relationship, and a second novella starring Nick, Charlie, and Tori, titled This Winter, is set to be republished in the US in September 2023.
